Mitchell Summer was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania into a family of artists, painters, composers and one tenor.  From an early age he started drawing and sculpting with skill and maturity. He attended weekend and evening classes in oil painting, stone carving, pottery, and courses in Art History, and excelled in the visual arts.

While still in his teens he moved to the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean and made a living in marine construction and salvage.  Frequent travels to Europe and New York viewing masterpieces in museums such as the Prado, Louvre, Musée D’Orsay, Rijksmuseum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art inspired Mitchell to start painting again.

Mitchell studied the techniques of oil painting and glazing for several years with Tom Saint Vincent di Coio, in St Thomas, a master of color perspective. Mitchell left St Thomas in 1997 and worked in Florida, New York and California.  He was never able to completely stay away from the Caribbean, and now spends part of every year in the French West Indies.

Mitchell’s paintings reflect the colors and textures including the influence of light and water he has experienced over the years.

Mitchell has had studios in San Francisco, New York, San Diego, Sag Harbor, St Barths, Miami Beach and Jupiter. His current studio is located in Bradenton, FL.

The website has selected several paintings of his current works to reflect a sampling of the art of Mitchell Summer.
